PISTOL
We have officially been approved to operate as a pistol club. The SSAA (NSW) Wagga Wagga Inc club has formed a pistol sub club operating at our Big Springs Range. Our field rifle/metallic silhouette area has been approved for pistol usage.

We are approved for:  Action Match - Combined Services - Law Enforcement Activities - Rimfire pistol silhouette - Single Action wild bunch -  Practical shooting

Centre-fire and high cal metallic silhouette is approved as well but this will require some additional infrastructure before those matches can be run .We now offer the ability to shoot rifles, pistols and shotguns at the one facility that is wholly owned by our club. This is huge news and has been the result of several years or hard work from our committee members, SSAA NSW, Department of Sport Rec and Racing, National parks and The NSW firearms registry. The pistol sub club was formed a little over 12 months ago, more as a steering committee to get things happening. There a number of people to thank which will be covered in the near future. We will be releasing information and photographs in the next few weeks that will hopefully answer your questions and let you know what our club is up to moving into the future. We are hugely fortunate to have our own land, a strong club and and a progressive and forward thinking committee.  We look forward to bringing you more information very soon.

Update 2/02/22

The SSAA (NSW) Wagga Wagga Branch Inc Pistol sub club committee consists of

President/Chairman:       Greg Chapman

Range Captain:              Mick Reed

Secretary:                     David Wade

Treasurer:                      Frank Cohn

Committee Members:     Rob Baird, Neil Russell and Mick Doughty.

The sub club has been approved to operate as a pistol range catering for the following disciplines.

  • Action Match
  • Combined Services
  • Law Enforcement Activities
  • Handgun silhouette, rimfire, Centre fire and High Calibre. (note: Rimfire ONLY approved at this time pending range baffling improvements for CF and HC)
  • Single Action (wild bunch .357/9mm only)
  • Practical Shooting (non-moving shooter)
  • Practice, Sight in and training in all approved pistol disciplines

These disciplines were applied for as our existing Field Rifle/Metallic Silhouette area could be modified to legally run these events.

A 15-metre side baffle has been built between our main Benchrest range and the Field rifle area to enhance the safety of all members. New target frames have been built including stand alone frames that can operate at any distance beyond 5 metres and all the way to 200 metres. Self-healing and non-ricochet reactive targets have been purchased and set up to allow a variety of shooting to take place with minimal range closures for target resets and without the need for metal target shrouds.

There are even two duelling trees for some enjoyable and challenging training.

The Committee has set a yearly membership fee of $100 for adults and $50 for those between 12yr and 18yr of age. Membership fees will be due in March of each year. Those joining between now and March will be approved till March 2023. There will be NO pistol range fees for pistol members. Targets will be purchased from the main club at the usual costs. Subject to the conditions below, those local members who wish to give pistol disciplines a try on a P650 will not be charged for their first attendance. Any visits after that will attract a $20 fee payable to the main club.

The Committee has decided that initially membership will ONLY be open to those who are already known members of the SSAA Wagga branch OR those who have a current Pistol licence. This is due to a few reasons. As a new club we have a limited number of Pistol Accredited Range Officers, and it was felt that the wagga branch members who wish to gain their pistol licence should be our first priority. Those undergoing their probationary pistol licence time frames and those on P650’s requires constant supervision so again it was felt that the sub club should focus its activities on those local members first.
